AIS further broadens network capabilities with Apertio One-NDS

Mobile World Congress, 11-14 February 2008: Advanced Info Service PLC Co., Ltd (AIS), Thailand’s largest mobile operator, today announces it has substantially enhanced its network applications using the Apertio One-NDS (Network Directory Server). The common subscriber profile data repository currently supports 23 million subscribers and is scalable to meet the needs of the network expected through rapid subscriber growth.

AIS is benefiting from the open and flexible design of the One-NDS platform, allowing it to develop bespoke, real-time applications to match the exact demands of customers and the network. AIS has created a suite of 15 applications with assistance from Apertio’s experienced staff, including the Short Message First Delivery Attempt (FDA).

This set of FDA applications was launched on New Year’s Eve 2007. It has reduced reliance on the SMSC license by up to 80 per cent through migration of SMS traffic to the FDA system. It is expected that all SMS traffic will be handled by the FDA system in March 2008. The suite is also providing a SS7 CAMEL based charging interface as part of a converged core signalling solution.

AIS first adopted the One-NDS in 2004 to launch a number of applications, including a Gateway Location Register (GLR) and Account Management Function (AMF). Apertio’s products and consulting staff was selected for its ability to integrate applications from different network equipment manufacturers into the One-NDS. In addition, the capability of One-NDS to scale to the requirements of the network, supporting the marketing teams’ initiatives, was a key element to Apertio’s selection.

By deploying the One-NDS, AIS is unifying and simplifying its subscriber data to enable faster time to market for new services. Apertio will continue to work with AIS to support existing services and to customise dataless applications to enhance existing services.

Issara Dejakaisaya, vice president of the Telecom and IT Application Development Department at AIS said: "Apertio has enabled us to move towards an architecture which meets our current needs and supports our future growth. The Apertio team’s extensive experience in the IT and Telco space has been invaluable in designing, deploying and, now, the continued support and development of the network."

Rajeev Sunder, VP & general manager of Asia Pacific for Apertio commented, "AIS had the foresight, back in 2004, to know that a move towards a centralised subscriber repository would provide it with the ability to deploy real-time applications. Our open architecture has allowed AIS to integrate third party applications and utilise subscriber profile data in the creation of new services. In this sense, they are preparing the foundations for some exciting initiatives in the future."
